COMMUNITY COOKBOOK SALE

The College Neighborhood Foundation (CNF) is sponsoring a cookbook sale based on recipes given by people in the surrounding neighborhoods, including Rolando Park. In addition to the recipes, the cookbook includes a brief history page on each of the college area neighborhoods, including Rolando Park. The cookbooks are being sold for $13 each. For every cookbook purchased by Rolando Park residents, $6 goes into a tax deductible fund to benefit the Rolando Park Community Council. The additional $7 covers the cost to CNF of producing the cookbook. If you write a check to the College Neighborhood Foundation for the $13 purchase, you will be provided with a receipt verifying the $6 tax deductible donation. The cookbooks will be on sale at the CNF booth at the Rolando Street Fair this Sunday, 3/28 and at the the RPCC General Meeting on Thursday, April 8th. You can also contact an RPCC board member to arrange to purchase a cookbook.

Rolando Park Elementary School 3/6 Haiti Fundraiser Car Wash Is ON

The car wash being held by students of Rolando Park Elementary to raise money for Haiti is still on for March 6th.  They are accepting donations in whatever amount people would like to give. If it is raining in the late morning, they will cancel the car wash. If not, they will be at the school ready to go from 1-3pm. If it rains during the car wash, they will call it off. Even if you don't need your car washed, the kids are very grateful for any donation you can give to help them in their efforts to support earthquake victims.

Change of Location for Winter Season Celebration

The College Area Business District has decided to move this year’s Winter Season Celebration & Tree Lighting Ceremony to an indoor location. Please be advised that the new location of the event is across the street from its original spot; now to be held at the College Avenue Baptist Church inside the Gymnasium.

Access to the parking lot will be available from College Ave & Arosa St. just north of El Cajon Blvd. The event activities will not be diminished by the new location, and we are very thankful to have the cooperation of CABC for this last-minute move inside.

Boulevard BOO! Parade & Carnival

This Saturday, October 24th, a neighborhood tradition continues... 

The College Area Business District and the College Neighborhoods Foundation spearheaded the dynamic return of the long-awaited parade in 2005. The Boulevard BOO! Parade, with a Halloween theme, is a smash hit for all ages as it travels along El Cajon Boulevard through the heart of the College neighborhoods. The rebirth of this tradition has excited and inspired community residents, businesses, and SDSU. It has become a favored annual event. 

El Cajon Boulevard has a long history with parades. The relationship goes back to Saturday, October 16, 1937, when Governor Frank Merriam lead a parade sponsored by The then El Cajon Boulevard Civic Association from Park Boulevard to Euclid Avenue. The longest parade on El Cajon Boulevard, historic route Highway 80 took place in May, 1949. It was seven miles long, from Park Boulevard to the La Mesa City limits. Western film and rodeo star Hoot Gibson served as the Honorary Marshal. 

In 1931, San Diego State College moved to “Montezuma Mesa” and began to celebrate Homecoming every fall. The SDSC parades began in 1940, and were held most years through 1967, taking place at the westerly end of El Cajon Boulevard. In the early 1960’s the Homecoming Parade was moved to Montezuma Road, closer to the State campus. 

Beware, venture there if you dare! Be a participant in The Boulevard BOO! Parade. Once again it will be time to walk like a zombie, fly like a bat and dance like a ghost. Join us in fiendish and ghoulish fashion, celebrating our community with spirit and pride. (Our very own Councilwoman Marti Emerald is this year's Grand Marshall!)

Reminder: Saturday, September 19th is Zena Canyon Clean Up!

Tomorrow, September 19th, is Rolando Park’s “Annual Zena Canyon Clean Up” from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon.

We will be setting up registration at the entry to the canyon located on Zena Drive. We will provide large trash bags, water and one very large dumpster. You may want to bring a pair of gloves, and an extra trash bag just in case we run out. If you have any non-hazardous trash that you would like to dispose of after this event, please feel free to utilize the dumpster that will be at this location until the city removes it.

This event is sponsored by “I Love a Clean San Diego” & San Diego Coastal Clean Up, and would not be possible without their support. We hope to see as many of you as possible helping take care of our beautiful canyon!

Community Cleanup and Recycling Event

The City of San Diego's Environmental Services Department is bringing several 40-cubic yard bins to our neighborhood to collect discards, recyclables and non-recyclables.

Kroc Center Hosts Woodstock Tribute This Saturday

The Paul Green School of Rock Music (PGSORM) and the Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center is pleased to present the “Summer of Love” Woodstock ’09 from Noon until 6pm on Saturday, August 15th, 2009 at the Kroc Center.

What: Woodstock ’09 will feature music from local musicians as well as PGSORM, The West Coast touring All-Stars, and the Kroc Kids Junior Theatre Company. There will also be arts & crafts, activities, food, and music all keeping in the theme of the late 60’s/early 70’s. The event will also feature various organizations from San Diego promoting ecology, art and music.

Why: To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original Woodstock Festival! The Woodstock ’09 event will feature live music by the San Diego School of Rock, who will play a selection of songs by Janis Joplin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jimi Hendrix, Santana and more. The event will also include a raffle featuring gift certificates and exciting items from local restaurants and area attractions with all proceeds going to the School of Rock Scholarship Fund.

Weekend Event to Help Save Another Starbucks from Closing

San Diego community members from the College Area, Rolando Park, Rolando Village, El Cerrito, and surrounding neighborhoods are banding together in an effort to save the Campus Plaza Starbucks store from closure.

This store was the second Starbucks to open in the San Diego market (almost 2 decades ago!), but is on the list Starbucks published of store closures it plans for this year.  In an effort to save it, local customers will host a “Save OUR Starbucks and Barista Appreciation Day” this Sunday, June 28th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Campus Plaza Starbucks store, located at 6155 El Cajon Blvd. in San Diego.

The event, planned to increase business, is also a celebration.  Community patrons will have the opportunity to share memories of times spent at the Campus Plaza Starbucks location and write their comments to the corporation.  Additionally, locals will honor the outstanding staff at the Campus Plaza store by writing notes of thanks to their favorite baristas for their years of wonderful service to the community.

College Avenue Clean Up

Redwood Park Community Members,

We need more volunteers for the College Avenue clean up this Saturday, June 20. Please let me know if you will be able to attend. So far, we have seven volunteers (Ben L. George G., Gretchen S., Taina O., Don B., Marie G. and Anna O.) We will meet at 8:00 am at the corner of Rock Street and College Avenue.

We will do this clean up with the help of Rebuilding Together San Diego (RTSD). They have a program called "Taking It to the Streets" and loan all the equipment necessary for  a community clean up. You will not have to bring anything with you. They provide work gloves, rakes, shovels, brooms, trash cans, trash bags, grabbers, weed wackers, etc. We'll have water as well.

Is there anyone who has a truck that could pick up the equipment from the warehouse on Friday and return it on Monday? The warehouse is located at 2013 Franklin Avenue (92113). Let me know and I will give you more details.

The scope of work, depending on the number of volunteers, will include:

1. Clean up on the monument sign easement
2. Trash pick up along College Avenue (west and east side)
3. Weed abatement on College frontage road near College Ave. and Streamview Drive
4. Clean up of vacant lot on 60th St. and University Ave.
5. Paint pole base at the corner of College and Rock Place (this is green with yellow dots right now, but it was tagged)

Should we take down dead trees? There are about five small dead trees along College Avenue that have been dead for years. Does anyone have a chainsaw that could cut these down?

Feel free to bring kids. We can have them work with adults on the 60th and University lot.

I also have access to paint if anyone needs paint for graffiti removal. Let me know.
